Are Bit Flags Bad?

Is the process of using integer data types to represent multiple values via the use of bit flags bad practice? It seems to go against the rules of normalization in a single field can represent multiple values. On the other hand that since these values can be tested for via bitwise operations, that it's not entirely bad.

Any insight would be appreciated.

ThanksI've used integers to store multiple bit states on occasion and found it very usefull.

For instance, you can have multiple boolean security states, and if you think of them as separate boolean values then separate bit fields would seem appropriate. But is you think of them as a single value describing the overall state of the security setting, then you aren't really violating any principles by storing them as a single field.

At a practical level, SQL Server will combine up to eight bit fields and store them internally as a single byte anyway.

Normalization is good practice because it leads to efficient and functional design. But if you avoid an instance where violating it would actually improve an application, then you are letting the cart lead the horse. Normalization is principle, not dogma.|||there is a multitude of examples where M$ itself used...smallint...as a datatype for this type of scenarios. i think int would be an overkill, while following the trend would save you storage space while doing the job.

Applying SP2 for SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition (on 64 bit windows)

Hello,

I'm experiencing some issues with applying SP2. I'm getting a failure for the database engine (on two instances that have been installed on a server). I've noticed in the forum that a few others have had some issues in this area as well. The slightly strange thing is that if I check the version of SQL Server on each instance it is telling me that SP2 has been installed:
9.00.3042.00 SP2 Enterprise Edition (64-bit)

So, the logs tell me I have a failed upgrade, but SQL is telling me it has been upgraded.
Any help would be appreciated.

If I then check what version files are at, sqlservr.exe is at version 2005.90.3054.0 and Microsoft.SqlServer.MaintenancePlanTasks.dll is at version 9.0.3054.0.

select @.@.version is returning "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (X64) Mar 23 2007 18:41:50 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)"

So does this mean that the logs are not correct and SP2 and the updates have been successfully applied?

|||Could you check the version of Binaries ? sqlservr.exe|||Associated Hotfix Build: 3159

|||Exactly.

File version: 2005.090.3054.00
Product Version: 9.00.3054.00

This is for both instances. So, it looks as though the database engine got upgraded successfully - but the logs are telling me otherwise!
|||Exactly.

Application Login and Integrated Security

Hello,

We're having a bit of a problem getting Integrated Security to work with a .Net 2.0 application and SQL 2005. While we're tweaking permissions on the SQL-side, we came across an account "Application Login" and wondered what its role is. First, our problem:

Currently, the users in the AD group get a connection error. This group is defined as follows at the instance level:

role: public

user mapping: to the database without any default schema

securables: none

status: grant and enabled

At the database security level:

general: none

securables: execute on all (100+) stored procedures

And we gave them "Execute" on the database itself.

A little background: we had detached and copied this database from one server to another. So we suspect that the Application Login may have been modified/corrupted, even though it appears to be identical between the original and the copied databases. So we redefined it on the copied DB to match the original.

Another group, which is defined as dbo on the database, has no problem at all connecting and running the application.

The Application Login has Execute permissions on all stored procedures and Delete, Insert, Select, Update, and View Definition on the ChangeLog table. It also has db_DataReader, db_DataWriter, and db_ddlAdmin roles associated with it.

Is there another SQL login required for initial connection to the database even though Integrated Security=SSPI is used in the connection string?

Does anyone see where we may be missing a security setting for the non-dbo user group to connect to the database?

Thanks very much for any suggestions, ideas ....

Cheers,

Tess

Okay, it looks like granting Execute to the database itself has resolved the connection issue.

Have a good day everyone!

Anything specific about SQL 2000 64 bit ?

Is there anything special needed to administer a 64 bit SQL Server ? We are
looking forward to deploying 64 bit on some servers and wanted to know if
there is anything I need to be aware of from an admin perspective,
installation,configuring, troubleshooting,etc..
There is a doucment for 64 bit sql server, you can read it before moving to
64 bit platform.
Thanks, Regards, Vincent

|||There are two pretty important things you should be aware of relating to
administering a 64-bit instance of SQL 2000.
1) You cannot run DTS packages on the 64-bit instance. You have to have a
32-bit instance that will run the DTS packages against the 64-bit instance
databases.
2) The administrative tools (Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer, for
example) have no 64-bit editions. Again, you have to run these tools on a
32-bit machine and connect to your 64-bit instance.
If you are planning on running 64-bit SQL 2000, I'm guessing you have an
Itanium machine (I think the 64-bit SQL 2000 edition is only for Itaniums).
SQL 2005 has both Itanium and x64 versions, with a more complete set of tools
and functionality. If you could work with 2005, you might be happier.
