Are Bit Flags Bad?

Is the process of using integer data types to represent multiple values via the use of bit flags bad practice? It seems to go against the rules of normalization in a single field can represent multiple values. On the other hand that since these values can be tested for via bitwise operations, that it's not entirely bad.

Any insight would be appreciated.

ThanksI've used integers to store multiple bit states on occasion and found it very usefull.

For instance, you can have multiple boolean security states, and if you think of them as separate boolean values then separate bit fields would seem appropriate. But is you think of them as a single value describing the overall state of the security setting, then you aren't really violating any principles by storing them as a single field.

At a practical level, SQL Server will combine up to eight bit fields and store them internally as a single byte anyway.

Normalization is good practice because it leads to efficient and functional design. But if you avoid an instance where violating it would actually improve an application, then you are letting the cart lead the horse. Normalization is principle, not dogma.|||there is a multitude of examples where M$ itself used...smallint...as a datatype for this type of scenarios. i think int would be an overkill, while following the trend would save you storage space while doing the job.

If it is Error log, sql server by itself keep only 6+1 (current) copies by
default. The old files will be deleted automatically.
If it is Transaction log backup files, then use database maintenance plan to
fix a archival day. So as old file(s) will be deleted automatically.

You can change the number of error logs maintained by editing the Registry
for any instance. For the default instance, find the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\ MSSQLServer and edit it by
adding a new value. Define the value with the name NumErrorLogs, and the
type REG_DWORD. Supply any initial value desired, but keep in mind that the
value you enter when editing the Registry will be in hexadecimal format.
For a named instance, you need to find the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\<SQL Server
Instance Name>\MSSQLServer. Again, use the Edit feature of the Registry to

appSettings from web.config cannot be referenced in emailed report subscription

Server Software:

SQL Server 2000 (all sp's up to date)

SSRS 2000 (all sp's up to date)

We have an error when a report subscription is sent via email.

Our report definitions reference a key in the web.config file so that we can have a single location to reference our department's name in all reports. Our department name changes frequently as our company is bought and sold and it is difficult to manually update 700+ reports.

In report designer we have a text field with the following value expression:

=System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.appSettings("Department").ToString()

Our web.config looks like this:

<add key="Department" value="Report created by: Corporate Reporting and Analysis" />

The reports work perfectly in every aspect accept when they are schedules to be emailed. When the email recipient receives the email (not matter what format, mhtl, pdf, etc...) the department string value is replaced with: #Error

Is this a bug with the report schedule and deilvery component? ..or is there a permission problem when accessing: System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.appSettings("Department").ToString() ?

Well, I believe I solved the issue:

The report scheduling service is located in another folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin\ReportingServicesService.exe

...and its configuration file is called:

ReportingServicesService.exe.config

All we had to do was modify this config file to match our web.config appSettings and "Presto!" it worked.

Also, remember to restart the "ReportServer" service after updating the ReportingServicesService.exe.config file in order to immediately reset the changes.

Can we in any way assign a role ( change a role ) when the user connects ? This based on the application used. maybe via the connect string ?

Application Settings and data extensions

I have application settings that I set in a configuration class and expose
via properties. My business objects use these settings. I use these

Application Roles and Bulk Insert

Is it possible to grant a user access to Bulk Insert via an Application Role
?
I have a situation where I dont want to grant users direct access to any
tables, but there is one table that they will need to do a bulk insert into.
I cant see anywhere that you can assign an approle as part of bulkadmin.
Any ideas of how to do this would be appreciated. Thanks.I don't believe you can use "Application roles" for this, but you can assign
"Bulk Insert Administrator" Server Role to any individual Server Login...
Under SQL Server Login Properties, Server Roles, one of the Server Roles is

Application Role

I am confused . What is considered an application and how SQL would know ?

If I have a web site accessing SQL VIA IIS will SQL Server treat it as an application ? How about MS Excel ?

Also , If I was to use the application of Power builder , using app role , how do control which user can use the app ?

ThanksAn application role is activated for a connection by running the sp_setapprole stored procedure. The idea is you can activate the application role by putting the password in the compiled code of your application, while people using MS Access, and Query Analyzer can not get the same permissions because they do not know the password for the application role. Look up sp_setapprole in BOL.

Appending to a text file via DTS

DTS wizard is not allowing me to append the data to a text file. Every time I run DTS and choose the destination to be this text file (say A.txt), it overwrites the data. I have a table whose data I am dumping to a text file. I truncate the table, then get the data again into it and want to append it to the same text file. But I end up overwriting the text file with the new data.

Kindly let me know where I am going wrong.I am having the same issue as well... I thought I remember seeing an option checkbox somewhere to do that... but I cant seem to find it.
I doubt we are the only ones having to deal with this, so can someone please chime in with an answer or maybe a possible direction for us to follow? Thanks in advance... :)

appending current Row ID

I am trying to append the current row ID to a string I am trying toinsert via a sproc. I have retrieved the @.@.Identity and I am passing itinto a class with a parameter and calling it using:

Listings.UpdateDB AddNewListing = new Listings.UpdateDB();

AddNewListing.InsertListing (Bathrooms.Text, Bedrooms.Text,Description.Text, Features.ToString(), Address.Text, Price.Text, FN);

I would like to add the current row ID to "FN" like:

No, you cannot restrict connections based on the application that made them. But you can restrict connections based on the account they were made with. You can try to have your application connect to SQL Server using a specific account and not grant any connection rights to the users - then they would only be able to access the database through the application. Of course, if they would debug the application, they could figure out how it connects to SQL Server (the account and the password), but this would at least prevent accidental connections from other applications.

Anyone use Litespeed?

I attempted installing yesterday on a cluster, and the installation
went fine, but when I kicked off the backup via Litespeed, I received
the following error...
[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Failed to create the s
ecurity
environment for VDI. Ensure that the SQL Server Service account has
administrator access to this server. Note: Administrator privilege
can be restriced by registry/file and policy changes that can prevent
this operation from succeeding.
The SQL Service acct does have admin rights on the server. I installed
it as someone in the admin group. And I kicked off the backup as an
admin. I'm waiting for a call back from Imceda software on this, but
wanted to see if anyone out there had any ideas.Corey,
Might try making sure the SQL Agent is running under the SYSADMIN fixed
server role and that the domain user account for the SQL Server and SQL
Server Agent services have the necessary permissions to write backup files
to the disk.

writes it native backups to the same spot, so still not sure why
Litespeed isn't working. I installed on a standalone server (not a
cluster) in the same domain, and pointed to the same backup loaction,
and everything worked. I've got a ticket in with Imceda, so I'll write
back with the results/findings.
