Thanks for the response. I had already seen that KB article, but was
wondering if anyone had identified what causes this to start occurring. For
well over a year, I have not seen this message, then recently it started to
appear. I am leaning towards an upgrade by our ITS team of SMS 2000 to SMS
2003, and the application of the new SMS advanced client (not sure if SMS
uses SNMP to communicate with clients, and vice-versa). This seems to
roughly coincide with the start of these messages. In the meantime, I will
configure my monitoring software to stop alerting me of these messages.
Any thoughts?

Anyone Use Live Vault?

Hi Everyone,
I'm investigating a software called Live Vault (http://www.livevault.com)
whose purpose is to continuously monitor and record changes in a SQL Server
database, at the database file level, and periodically send these changes to
a remote server where they're applied to matching files. In essence, it's
kind of up-to-the-minute backup of the database.
I am unsure about how this software is going to perform and/or affect the
database and I'm very interested in hearing from anyone who has experience
with this software.
Any information, thoughts and opinions regarding this tool is greatly
appreciated.

They do not state on their case studies exactly what OS's and Database
products are supported. Not a word about SQL Server on their site.
Ask the vendor if they have certified their product for SQL Server.
And don't forget, picking up the bits off disk, shipping them over a
connection, does induce performance limitations, and if your data were to go
corrupt on the local drive, the corruption is faithfully copied to them.
A service like this does not eliminate the need for regular Database and Log
dumps.

Thank you very much for your input.
I do nightly full database backups and hourly transaction log backups during
business hours every day and copy these backups onto tape each night. This
leaves a potential one-day data loss in case of catastrophic failure.
Management sees Live Vault as a way to have an "up-to-the-minute" database
backup. Our systems group has had success using Live Vault to restore basic
user files e.g. Word documents or PDF documents, that sort of thing.
However, I am very suspicious of a product that monitors live SQL Server
data files. It sounds wonderful in theory but I've always been very leary
of the kind of bit level monitoring that's required.
I am really hoping someone on the newsgroup is using or has used the product
and could give a first hand account of their experiences. If there's anyone
out there reading this, I'd love to hear your honest assessment of the
product, any problems you've had and the support you received from Live
Vault addressing problems.
