Archive Stored Procedure

My SP looks like this that originally populates the record set.

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.sp_insert_file

@.KBID int,
@.rev int,
@.filename nvarchar(50),
@.moddate datetime,
@.owner nvarchar(50),
@.author nvarchar(50)

As

INSERT INTO KBFile
(KBID, rev, filename, moddate, owner, author)
VALUES (@.KBID,@.rev,@.filename,@.moddate,@.owner, @.author)
GO

I need to have a stored procedure that will select a recordset based on KBID(PK) and archive the entire record set to another table. I then need to be able to UPDATE the individual records for this record set in the KBFile table.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Used Trigger instead of SP

What about using an update trigger ? You will be able to audit all change events (not only these from stored procedures)

HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de|||

Often, a TRIGGER is used for Audit trails since the TRIGGER execution cannot be avoided. Audit trails are more 'risky' when stored procedures are used.

You might find one of these references pointing to the use of TRIGGERS to be helpful:

Apply insert duplicated key record

Hi~
When insert, just insert if it is a new item or update it if duplicated. The update operation should be summing or averaging. Anyone help?

INSTEAD OF INSERT Trigger
-Check for dupe
--If dupe, increment
--Else INSERT

Adamus

|||

Thank you for reply.

But would you give me some sample query?

|||

1. Validate if the data availabile in the Table

2. If Yes , execute the Update command

3. If No, execute the Insert command

(ex)

if Exists (Select * From SomeTable Where SomeColumn=SomeValue)

Update

Set

SomeValueColumn = SomeValueColumn + New Value

Where

SomeColumn=SomeValue

Else

Insert Into SomeTable values (...)

|||

Thank you for your help.
Here is more specific case.

CREATE TABLE mytable
(
id1 int,
id2 int,
value1 int,
PRIMARY KEY(id1,id2)
);

CREATE TRIGGER mytrigger ON mytable
INSTEAD OF INSERT
AS
BEGIN
IF EXISTS(SELECT * FROM INSERTED I,mytable M
WHERE I.id1=M.id1 AND I.id2=M.id2)
UPDATE mytable SET value1 = value1 + 100
ELSE
INSERT INTO mytable SELECT id1,id2,value1 FROM INSERTED
END

BULK INSERT mytable FROM 'mydatafile_1.dat' WITH (FIRE_TRIGGERS);(1)
BULK INSERT mytable FROM 'mydatafile_2.dat' WITH (FIRE_TRIGGERS);(2)
BULK INSERT mytable FROM 'mydatafile_3.dat' WITH (FIRE_TRIGGERS);(3)

I want insert a record if new item, update it by adding new item value to the original value.

Suppose the 'mydatafile_1.dat' has all new items(1).
'mydatafile_2.dat' has some new items and some duplicated items(2)
and 'mydatafile_3.dat' has all new items(3).

Only (1) and (3) are applied correctly. (2) is updated all of record but never inserted the new items.
It seems that the validation part should be repaired.
And, I want to change 100 to the new inserted value.

application retrieve same records, sometimes fast, sometimes extreme slow

Hi,
Sometimes, in my application, when i browse a
record, it takes very fast 1/2 seconds but sometimes it
seems like hang there and take a very long time around
10 minutes to finish, could it be deadlock ? Any other
suggestion?
How to check and prevent from deadlock?
thanks.
regards,
florenceCould it be possible you are blocked due to your choice of isolation levels?
You could run sp_who and see if anyone is blocking you the next time your
app slows down. You could set to READ UNCOMMITTED if its acceptable by your
app. Then again, a commit by another app should not take that long, so you
might want to look at fixing the other app instead.
Another possibility is that the data was in the buffer cache when the app
was fast.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't set any isolation

Appending to a record

I have created a Table that contains a WorksheetID field and a SalesNotes field. I can successfully populate that table but I am uncertain as to how I can append to the SalesNotes record.

I want to keep the orginal notes but populate addtional notes.

Would I do this by using the UPDATE call?

Many Thanks

Hi,

you explanation is a bit unclear, but if you want to fill the table with additional data which can′t be filled during the initial load, you can sure use an update statement to modify the exisiting records.

Appending data to an existing record

I am a novice when it comes to using SQL. I would like to append text to existing data in a specified column, but I can not figure out how to do it. I was trying to use an update query, but as far as I can tell this only replaces the data within the column. Any help would be appreciatedHi

Use update statement .
eg.

table1 (tablename)
id values
1 text1
2 text2
3 text3

Let the table1 contains two fields id and value. U need to append some text
to the existing values. is it ?
ok...use the following postgresql query .
update table1 set values = values || 'newtext' where id = 1

|| --> string concat operator

This will result in

table1
id values
1 text1newtext
2 text2
3 text3

If you want to update all the rows remove the 'where' condition
Try this and reply

Here i mentioned is postgresql query , if u use some other database
please find the appropriate sting concat operator . In postgres || is the concat operator . If you use mysql or sql server , please find the correct concatenation operator.

Any particular reason why you can't use Full Text Search?
Dan|||Because Full Text index dosn't apply of Text Fields of type "text",
"ntext"!!!

Yes it does. I'm using it on a text column in one of my databases!
Dan|||Yes, performing a non-indexed search on the text of 2 million documents is
going to be slow. I'm surprised that it's just optimization you are
concerned with and the actual feasability.
Of course, consider using the Full-Text feature.
If you must perform LIKE comparisons on the rows, perhaps it would be
possible to run a process that parses the text of each document and then
stores key words in something like a 120 length varchar column.
For example:
Jacobs;California;McNeal;disability;insu
rance;claim
Once done, this column could be used for LIKE searches.

I'm guessing you haven't created the FTS index yet. Read BOL on how to do
this.

Using FTS you might see a significant improvement. You'd do well to post
questions about it microsoft.public.sqlserver.fulltext
Dan|||Keep in mind that text stores text in ANSI (1 byte per character) and ntext
stores the text in Unicode (2 bytes per character) format. This is why ntext
will require more disk storage and operations on the data will be somewhat
slower. If the character set is Arabic, then you have no other choice but
the use Unicode.

Anyone Use Live Vault?

Hi Everyone,
I'm investigating a software called Live Vault (http://www.livevault.com)
whose purpose is to continuously monitor and record changes in a SQL Server
database, at the database file level, and periodically send these changes to
a remote server where they're applied to matching files. In essence, it's
kind of up-to-the-minute backup of the database.
I am unsure about how this software is going to perform and/or affect the
database and I'm very interested in hearing from anyone who has experience
with this software.
Any information, thoughts and opinions regarding this tool is greatly
appreciated.
Lou
Hi
They do not state on their case studies exactly what OS's and Database
products are supported. Not a word about SQL Server on their site.
Ask the vendor if they have certified their product for SQL Server.
And don't forget, picking up the bits off disk, shipping them over a
connection, does induce performance limitations, and if your data were to go
corrupt on the local drive, the corruption is faithfully copied to them.
A service like this does not eliminate the need for regular Database and Log
dumps.

|||Mike,
Thank you very much for your input.
I do nightly full database backups and hourly transaction log backups during
business hours every day and copy these backups onto tape each night. This
leaves a potential one-day data loss in case of catastrophic failure.
Management sees Live Vault as a way to have an "up-to-the-minute" database
backup. Our systems group has had success using Live Vault to restore basic
user files e.g. Word documents or PDF documents, that sort of thing.
However, I am very suspicious of a product that monitors live SQL Server
data files. It sounds wonderful in theory but I've always been very leary
of the kind of bit level monitoring that's required.
I am really hoping someone on the newsgroup is using or has used the product
and could give a first hand account of their experiences. If there's anyone
out there reading this, I'd love to hear your honest assessment of the
product, any problems you've had and the support you received from Live
Vault addressing problems.
Best regards,
Lou

LouHi
They do not state on their case studies exactly what OS's and Database
products are supported. Not a word about SQL Server on their site.
Ask the vendor if they have certified their product for SQL Server.
And don't forget, picking up the bits off disk, shipping them over a
connection, does induce performance limitations, and if your data were to go
corrupt on the local drive, the corruption is faithfully copied to them.
A service like this does not eliminate the need for regular Database and Log
dumps.

Best regards,
Lou
